Multi-use self-contained outbuilding

Limpsfield Chart, Surrey

Project Overview

Our client approached us with a brief to create a self-contained multi-use outbuilding positioned at the rear of their garden, serving as a focal point within an extensive landscaping design scheme. The aim was to design a space that would serve multiple purposes - functioning daily as a workspace while also being adaptable as a gym, a self-contained guest suite, and a cinema room complete with a kitchenette.

Design and Construction

We undertook all aspects of the project, starting with designing the build envelope in close collaboration with our structural engineers, planning authorities and building control. Preliminary works included digging and constructing the foundations, as well as installing essential utilities to ensure the space was functional and well connected.

Exterior Features

The exterior of the outbuilding is finished in Millboard composite cladding, paired with matching Millboard decking at the front. This material is not only visually striking but also fire-rated and virtually maintenance-free, making it an ideal choice for longevity and aesthetics. Additionally, the outbuilding features a sedum green roof edged in black stone, minimising its visual impact from elevated windows of the house and neighbouring properties. The main room is framed with large aluminium sliding doors, allowing for seamless integration with the outdoor environment. A concealed cladded door provides access to a separate storeroom with hidden a service void, ensuring that electrical and plumbing components are easily accessible yet out of sight.

Interior Features

Inside, the outbuilding is designed for maximum versatility. A fully bespoke feature wall with Oak battens conceals a custom-built fold-away king-size bed, allowing for comfort without compromising the multi-use functionality of the floor space. This design means the space can effortlessly transition from a sleeping area to a gym or office as needed.

The interior lighting system is custom programmable, allowing for scene setting to create the perfect mood for any activity. Flush recessed plastered-in wall lights enhance the overall ambiance, while the tiled floor is laid at a 45-degree angle for a dynamic visual effect.

The kitchenette includes a custom-built cabinet that conceals the workings of a Quooker tap, providing instant boiling water, chilled sparkling, and still water. An undermounted sink with a sleek marble worktop completes the space. Additionally, a pelmet in the ceiling conceals an electrically operated cinema screen, which effortlessly drops into position at the touch of a button for movie nights.

The service void contains an electric water heater, isolation valves, and all plumbing aspects for the shower room, ensuring easy maintenance access.
